The Face Within the Lute

Echoes beyond the Story

Step into the echoes that hum from the strings of the enchanted lute. Here you’ll find crossover illustrations, secret notes, and other harmonies that keep the melody of the tale alive.

In the Summer 2025 Special Edition of my blog, I brought back the Underwater Illustrations series, featuring visual portrayals of characters from my novels. One of these is the illustration for The Face Within the Lute.

In this image, we see the central characters of the novel: the enchanted lute and the minstrel. Beneath the water’s surface, the instrument glows with the warmth of fire, while human hearts float among the jellyfish. Both the fire and the hearts are iconic elements of the story.

In the Halloween 2021 Special Edition of my blog, I created two illustrations inspired by my horror novels. One of these features The Face Within the Lute.

In this illustration, we see Gauriel, the minstrel, and his enchanted lute. For this special illustration, I drew inspiration from the Day of the Dead, one of Mexico’s oldest traditions, reflecting the rich Mexica mythology that plays an important role in the novel.

Red-haired characters in the novels of M.A. Álvarez

In all my novels, there is a red-haired character

For the World Book Day 2024 Special, I published a blog post exploring the red-haired characters across my stories, along with an illustration I created myself featuring them. Among these characters is Gauriel, from The Face Within the Lute.

Truth be told, it wasn’t something I planned —having a red-haired character in every novel. But while working on this story and designing Peccoth, both in words and visuals, I dove deep into researching red-haired people throughout history. After so much thought and exploration, one day I suddenly realized: every single one of my novels has a redhead! And I must say, I was genuinely fascinated by this unexpected coincidence.
